Unfortunately there’s no magic formula but there are some steps you can take to avoid landing in your subscribers’ junk folder. In this post I share with you few ways to prevent your amazing newsletters from Going to Spam:
For newsletter I use Mailchimp, but those steps are not just for Mailchimp users.
Metadata
Always add Metadata to your email, like the field “To” send your news through verified domains and ask your recipients to add you to their address book.
Coding in your email
Spam filters can be triggered by sloppy code, or code pulled in from Microsoft Word (if you just copy and paste content from MS Word to email – including formatting). Be careful and format your content properly. Here are few recommendations:
- clear formatting if you copy-paste from MS Word,
- promote engagement from your subscribers,
- be consistent with your branding,
- don’t use false or misleading header information,
- use correct HTML for email,
- do not send a single image,
- optimize your images the best you can.
Treat your email campaigns as an extension of your brand.
Always Get Permission to Send Emails, don’t assume you have permission
Newer assume you have permission to add a person to your mailing list. You always need consent in written format. And don’t use purchased, rented, or scraped lists – usually those are not legal and useful for you. But you can collaborate with persons with a larger mailing list and they invite their subscribers to subscribe to your mailing list.
Choose your opt-in method wisely
Choose opt-in method wisely and offer your subscribers something amazing to subscribe- of course this should be related with your business.
Don’t wait too long before contacting your subscribers
Be consistent and send valuable content your subscribers often. How often? This you should test or even ask your subscribers what they prefer (like once per week, month…).
Make it Easy to Unsubscribe
Tell recipients how to opt-out of receiving future emails from you. It is better that they unsubscribe than mark your email as spam.
Hope this helps you, so your newsletter will not go to spam.
