Just setting goals doesn’t make sense if you don’t plan to take any steps, to reach that goal.
Although there are also many negative opinions about goal setting during this time, I think it is nice to stop here and there and think about where you are in your life and where you want to continue your journey.
Of course, it doesn’t have to be a new year to set your goals, but it can be a nice motivation.
So this post is not just about setting new year goals, but whenever you want.
“How do you know you’ve arrived if you don’t know what your destination is?”
How do you choose the goal?
For many people, this is not a problem, but for some of us, it is sometimes quite a problem to set an exact goal.
First, I advise you to brainstorm ideas for all goals, without filters. Write down all the goal ideas.
Then choose those that excite you.
For each goal then consider if it is set enough precise. The goal should be:
- Specific: define as precisely as possible what your goal is.
- Measurable: you can measure it, e.g. in money, time, kg, cm …
- Achievable: it can be achieved.
- Result: what is the end result of this goal.
- Time bounding: by when do you want to reach it.
- Inspirable: motivates you to achieve it.
If all of the requirements apply to your goal, then it’s time to plan it in Asana. You can also use any other application, or a piece of paper and a calendar.
Goal example: 10/11/2020 I will run the 50km marathon.
I have also prepared a free guide to help you:
1 | Create New Project
First, create a new project and fill in all the required fields:
- Project name: The title of the project
- Team: Where do you want this project to be located. In my case, this is Goals (I create one project for each goal).
- You can choose the default layout below – for me, the “list” is the best choice
- Under privacy – you can also specify privacy.
- By clicking “Create project” you are creating a new project.
Example: 50km marathon
2 | Add All mini Goals (Sections)
Each goal is easier to achieve by break it into smaller parts. I call them “mini-goals”.
Example of mini goals:
- Running gear
- Proper nutrition
- Education – Coach
- Training
- Marathon
3 | Add task and subtasks
For each mini-goal, write down all the tasks you have to do.
Example of mini-goals with tasks:
- Running gear
- What equipment do I need
- Finding the Best Equipment – List
- Purchase of equipment
- Proper nutrition
- What is the right diet – counseling, education
- Preparing the menu
- Buying food
- Meal preparation
- Education – Coach
- What else does training require (eg rest, stretching …)
- Which coach is the best, contacting
- How to prepare for training
- Training
- What kind of training is most appropriate
- Draw up a workout plan
- Preparation of training and rest calendar
- Training 1: 2km
- Training 2: 3km …
- Marathon
- Marathon preparation
- Tek
4 | Add Due Date for mini goals and tasks
Then prepare a timeline for the mini-goals and individual tasks. Plan also more time if something goes wrong or some task are delayed.
Chose the date when the goal will be reached. Then you move around the timeline from the destination to the present, sorting out individual tasks and mini-goals so that everything is achievable.
An example of mini-goal and tasks:
- Running gear (do 3.2.2020)
- What equipment do I need 1.2.2020
- Finding the Best Equipment – List 2.2.2020
- Purchase of equipment 3.2.2020
- Proper nutrition (do 10.2.2020)
- What is the right diet – counseling, education 4.2.2020
- Preparing the menu 5.2.2020
- Buying food 10.2.2020
- Meal preparation 10.2.2020
- Education – Coach (do 15.2.2020)
- What else does training require (eg rest, stretching …) 11.2.2020
- Which coach is the best, contacting 12.2.2020
- How to prepare for training 15.2.2020
- Training (do 9.11.2020)
- What kind of training is most appropriate 16.2.2020
- Draw up a workout plan 17.2.2020
- Preparation of training and rest calendar 18.2.2020
- Training 1: 2km 20.2.2020
- Training 2: 3km … 22.2.2020
- Marathon (do 10.11.2020)
- Marathon preparation 9.11.2020
- Tek 10.11.2020
Now everything is set and you can take the small steps to achieve your goal easy!
